Anna: Ja, genau. Ich bin im ersten Semester.

Max: Oh, that’s far away! Why don’t you study in Berlin?

Anna: I want to get to know a new city. And the university in Munich is good.

Notes:

Don’t try to translate Wie geht es dir? word for word. Dir is the dative form of du. You’ll learn about the dative in a later lesson.

How to use Anki for Languages on Fire

Anki is a powerful flashcard app which helps you remember things much easier than traditional methods. It’s one of the techniques which make language learning with Languages on Fire so efficient. Since we are so convinced of Anki’s effectiveness, we have decided against including exercises in our course. Anki will be sufficient to master the material. We highly recommend you use it for memorizing words and phrases from our dialogues. Follow these steps to set it up. Get started right away, it’s very simple:

1. Download Anki on your phone from here.

2. Start Anki. It will need to access certain files on your phone. Give the necessary consent.

3. Download our flashcard deck to your phone from here.

4. Click on the file you downloaded. Anki will then ask you to import the deck. Confirm.

5. Click on our deck, start studying and let the magic happen.

[If you don’t start studying from lesson 1 on, you might want to erase the earlier lessons so you don’t need to study words which are too easy for you. Just press and hold the sub deck you want to erase (e. g. “01. Hallo”) and click on “Delete deck”.]

Try to use Try to use Anki every day. We need to review things frequently to remember them. You don’t have to spend too much time on it. 15 minutes a day will be highly effective. There will be some days where you won’t have the time to review, and that’s obviously not the end of the world. But try to not miss two days in a row to maintain your studying routine. One session of review shouldn’t last too long so it won’t be tiring. Around 20 minutes usually works best. If you do want to study more, simply do two sessions a day, one after you get up and one before you go to bed, for example. Scheduling fixed hours for Anki helps establish a routine. How much time you spend on Anki also depends on your personal goal. By default, you learn 20 new cards per day, meaning you’ll need 35 days to complete our course. See if that amount works for you. You can increase or decrease the number of cards in the settings by clicking and holding the deck, and then clicking on Options -> New cards -> New cards/day.

Number of Anki cards: 23 (5 from lesson 1; 18 from lesson 2)
