Genitiv (genitive case)

The genitive case is used to indicate belongings or relations. It’s not as common in spoken language where you often use von + dative instead (Der Bruder des Mannes ist arm. Der Bruder von dem Mann ist arm.). For singular masculine or neuter nouns -s or -es is added in most cases. You should stick with, -s which is always right; -es is not possible in some cases. Singular feminine nouns don’t change at all. The genitive forms are the following:

 Definite articleIndefinite article
Masculinedes großen Mannes/Mannseines großen Mannes/Manns
Feminineder großen Fraueiner großen Frau
Neuterdes großen Hauseseines großen Hauses

masculine/feminine/neuterder jungen Leutejunger Leute

The masculine nouns which require -n/en for the accusative case have the same forms for the genitive case and no -s (den Studenten, des Studenten; den Jungen, des Jungen).

The genitive case is used for certain prepositions, the most important ones being während, wegen and trotz (inspite of). In colloquial German, you use the dative with these prepositions instead.

The genitive is also used in certain fixed expressions like eines Tages or meines Wissens (as far as I know).
